Sunday night's performance of OFF THE TOP! WITH Jason Kravits was a comedic, musical tapestry spun by a true pro of improv. Moving his show from The Duplex downtown, Kravits' Birdland premier is sure to be the first of many performances uptown for this unstoppable freight train of funny. Now it is one thing to do standup comedy at a microphone in front of strangers with material that you have written, committed to memory and (hopefully) have worked out enough that the lines land with effortless timing sprinkled with occasional toppings of in-the-moment inspiration or at worst, having to deal with hecklers. Then, of course, there is the particularly quick wit of folk like Paula Poundstone and Jimmy Carr who invite audiences to go 15 rounds of back and forth with them throughout their acts, or the rapturous genius of the late, great Robin Williams whose whole act depended on his warp speed brain to make comedy out of everything unexpected and unplanned for. It is also another kind of art form to dive into the deep end of the comedy pool and work with no net, allowing the club surroundings and circumstances of various types of audience participation to be thrown at you whilst you stand amongst an expert group of improvisational improvisers al la Second City, Upright Citizens Brigade, and any other feeders into SNL. But, and this is your big BUT my angels, to make up your musical, broadway, jazz, standards, comedy, stand up, storytelling solo completely improvised cabaret on the spot sounds like multiple attempts at suicide with people watching you while cheering you on. Here's how it worked on the night...

Trouping down the stairs at the front of Birdland Proper, you enter The Birdland Theatre, the new cabaret space BL added last year, and when you are seated at your table you are given a 3x5 form to fill out that will serve as suggestions of "Words To Live By", "An Adjective", "A Short Phrase", etc. Once filled out they go into Kravits fishbowl next to the onstage grand piano; from this, he randomly selects forms, reads a suggestion aloud (could be filling in a song title or something his father/mother/brother told him etc.) and off he goes down a road that leads him he knows not where. Following the established Cabaret structure of taking the audience through stories from his life that have "meaning" and have brought Kravits to where he is today, and singing and talking about it all, Jason jumps headlong down rabbit holes of crazy written selections like "A Thing" - Frisbee or "A Place In The World" - Green Mountains Of Vermont and must deal with what awaits him down that abyss be it a Jazz song composed in the moment with his expert musical trio, or a total blind alley that necessitates drawing a new "Place In The World" or "Last Text You Sent/Received". His musicians perfectly supported Kravits by following his every musical whim. As he cued them by giving them quick hints of a song style and urging them to start playing by handing off rhythms for the drums or giving the old jazz singer snappy count off, the team perfectly collaborated and created, mostly, hilarious compositions. Real comedy, though, comes from real obstacles my dearlings, and one laugh out loud moment was Kravits turning to his Musical Director and saying, "You remember that old song we used to sing don't you?" only to see a shaking head and getting a resounding, "NOPE." Don't worry, they worked it out and made us laugh for reals. Joined on the stage alternately by jazz vocalist Michelle Walker, saxophonist Keith Loftis, and the inimitable broadway baritone, Norm Lewis, Kravits forced his guests to follow him into oncoming traffic the likes of which could have killed them and his act but skirted disaster each time with hilarious results. I mean, there was always another card to be drawn to move them on to a new path my pets. With songs, lyrics, stories, and characters all made up on the spot! Kravits Musical comedy, improv, was a thrill ride that rivaled anything at Coney Island and for that much fun, we have to give OFF THE TOP WITH Jason Kravits 4 out of 5 Rainbows.

lIVE iN BAKU, AZERJIBIZAN

https://www.michellewalkermusic.com/news/live-in-baku-azerjibizan

https://www.michellewalkermusic.com/news/live-in-baku-azerjibizan#comments

Uncategorized

MICHELLE WALKER AMAZES JAZZ FANS IN BAKU, azerbaijan Azerbaijan News AZERNEWS.COM 30 September 2019 11:56 (UTC+04:00) By Laman IsmayilovaMichelle Walker has performed at the International Mugham Center in Baku. With her wonderful voice, jazz singer conquered the audience. Her performance was accompanied by Alexei Cheremizov Quartet, Trend Life reported. The charismatic singer masterly used a blend of blues, bebop, swing and soul with playful rhythmic expressiveness.

Based in New York City, Walker bends the lines and pushes the boundaries of jazz vocal art. She is very versatile and blessed with a beautifully distinctive voice. She has a refreshing approach to arranging and interpreting often easily recognizable contemporary songs.
The singer has performed in Europe multiple times, including in the Lincoln Center Women in Jazz Festival. Each night Michelle will perform 3 sets; 7pm, 9pm and 10:30pm.

JGP RECORDS has released the sophomore recording of vocalist/arranger/composer Michelle Walker titled LOVE MISERY. The CD is a collection of tunes that thematically chronicle a love affair from the first hello to the final goodbye. The first half of the CD highlights songs of passionate love. On her take of the Nat King Cole favored tune Nature Boy, it showcases Michelle's panache and talent for arranging easily recognizable tunes, breathing new life into old songs. On the track Dance with Me, the 1970's popular rock tune originally recorded by the band Orleans, Michelle has arranged a tender and passionate mix-meter ballad that she and Frahm soar expertly through. The second half of the CD is about the sorrow and misery love can bring. Stand out tracks from this half of the recording are her brilliant arrangements of the classic Billie Holiday standard Detour Ahead and Paul Simon's 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover. The recording begins with an air of childlike enthusiasm for new love. With each new song on the recording the music grows progressively darker and wiser.

It was important to Michelle to record with her working band whom she has played, toured the US and Abroad with for years. Michelle notes "There is something to be said about playing with musicians that truly know you. We have developed a tight bond that is resoundingly evident in our live shows as well as on this recording I feel."

Having lived in the New York City area for over the past few years after relocating from Washington, DC, Walker quickly established herself as one of the most respected singers in New York. Birdland Jazz Club hailed of Walker after her sold out debut performance at the club as "....Masterful!" Walker also performs regularly at Smoke Jazz Club, Zinc Bar, Jazz at The Kitano and The 55 Bar. Walker was a finalist in the Jazzmobile Vocal Competition and has been nominated multiple times by the Washington Area Music Association awards (WAMA) for best jazz vocalist, best recording, best jazz group as well as receiving an Indie Award for best independent vocal jazz recording for her debut Slow Down.

Michelle studied vocal performance at The University of Maryland, College Park as well as the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music. Privately Michelle has studied one-on-one or in master class with jazz luminaries Mark Murphy, Betty Carter, Dena DeRose, Madeline Eastman, Nancy Marano, Benny Green, Christian McBride, Steve Davis, Jeff Clayton, Eric Reed and her mentor the late Pam Bricker. Mark Murphy, impressed with Michelle as a student, asked her to perform with him on tour.

Michelle has a tender and honest sincerity in her vocal approach. Her warm and sensual voice is searing and captivating. There is also a uniqueness to her delivery giving her an original voice. "I try to just imagine myself as the listener....asking myself what do I want to hear, learn or walk away with from this show. I like to also imagine myself giving people a very personal message and delivery tailor made for them in every song." Walker describes of her style.

In the years since transplanting herself in New York City, Walker has performed in over 1,000+ concerts in the US, Europe, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Russia and Israel. Walker has also performed at The White House for the lighting of the National Christmas Tree and performed in festivals opening for Wynton Marsalis, Take 6, George Benson, Chris Botti, Rene Marie and others.

Born in Bohmholder, Germany, Walker has lived in the US since she was 3 years old. The daughter of an Army Captain and very active homemaker mother, who insisted all her children study both music and dramatic arts. "We moved around the world a lot and I think my mother was concerned we would not have many friends so she enrolled us in Community Theater where ever we moved to keep us active and social." Walker has been performing on stages since she was five years old. "On long drives across the country my mom kept song books in the car that she led us through singing to pass the hours on the road. By the time I was ten years old I think I knew well over 1,000 tunes by heart. It was second nature to me, but now musicians stare at me perplexed that I know so many songs."

Walker has a warm and deep voice that has exceptional richness with a 5 octave range that is soulful and expressive. With her unique delivery, informed arrangements and beautiful warm tone, Michelle Walker is poised well for a career as one of her generation's best new voices in jazz.

For more information, please visit www.MichelleWalkerMusic.c...

*MICHELLE WALKER | SUMMER 2018 CONCERT HIGHLIGHTS*

MAY 25, 2018
Minton's Jazz Club | New York, NY | 7pm, 9pm Sets

MAY 26, 2018
The 55 Bar | New York, NY |
10pm, 11:30pm and 1:00am Sets
w/ OPIUS BLISS

JUNE 28, 2018
Concerts In The Garden| Chester, CT| 7pm and 8pm Sets
w/ OPIUS BLISS

JULY 12, 2018
Smoke Jazz Club | New York, NY |
7pm, 9pm, and 10:30pm Sets

JULY 18, 2018
Smoke Jazz Club | New York, NY |
7pm, 9pm, and 10:30pm Sets

JULY 22, 2018
ARTSCAPE FESTIVAL | Baltimore, MD| 1pm-3:00pm Set MICA PAC
w/ OPIUS BLISS

AUGUST 4, 2018
The 55 Bar | New York, NY
10pm, 11:30pm and 1am Sets

AUGUST 13, 2018
Bar Next Door | New York, NY |
8:00pm and 10:00pm Sets

SEPTEMBER 14, 2018
Bethesda Blues Club | Bethesda, MD|
7:00pm and 9:00pm Sets

SEPTEMBER 16, 2018
SOUTH JAZZ CLUB | Philadelphia, PA|
7:00pm and 9:00pm Sets

SEPTEMBER 18, 2018
European Tour Kick-off
Dates TBA

JOIN THE CONVERSATION:
#LoveMisery
#LoveMiseryTour
#MichelleWalkerJazz
#MichelleWalkerMusic
#JazzVocalistMichelleWalker
#MichelleWalkerSings
#MichelleWalkerJazzSinger
#MichelleWalkerJazzVocalist
#MusicNews
#JazzNews
#TourNews

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT MICHELLE:
http://www.michellewalker...
http://www.facebook.com/M...
http://www.twitter.com/mw...
http://www.instagram/mwalkerjazz

MEDIA & PRESS CONTACT:
PL Arts: Management, Booking & PR
PerformingLiveArts@Gmail.com

About JGP RECORDS:
JGPRecords@Gmail.com
JGP RECORDS is a New York, NY based independent jazz and world music record label launched in June 2001. We found ourselves in lovely leather bar-stools at the Bamboo Bar under its thatched roof. It’s great sitting at the bar to watch the cocktails being concocted in front of you.

By this stage of our evening the weather was a bit cool (it’s winter in Hanoi in December by the way) but definitely worth the experience. The great thing I love about Vietnam (potentially for all the wrong reasons) is that though the French had occupied Vietnam for almost 100 years, the influences of their food, wine and architecture is now a part of Vietnam’s fabric. Together with the beautiful Vietnamese food and produce, it is foodie heaven and a wine lovers paradise all rolled into one which makes Vietnam an amazing country to visit.
It wouldn’t have been right for us not to have foie gras (I know a lot of people disagree with how foie gras is obtained, but I admit, I love it.) And it was awesome! That’s all I say about that!
The best thing though was when Patrick’s wine arrived, he was presented with a Riedel Cabernet glass and the wine (Bordeaux blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from Chateau Le Grand Verdus) was poured from a Magnum. A.mazing!
After our drinks we wandered into Le Club Bar of the Hotel which is one of Hanoi’s classiest jazz bars. It was here we met Michelle Walker. An internationally renowned Jazz singer, songwriter based out of New York. Michelle is in Hanoi for a 3 month residential at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel.
After one of her sets, she was sitting on her own at the bar, so of course, we went and said hello. She is just lovely and seemed so touched we went to speak to her. We’re now following each other on Instagram! We loved it so much we popped in the next night to say hello and hear a few sets as well. She’s fabulous and yes I bought her CD (it’s cool you can still do that!) I can’t help myself – ask Patrick!
To round out our night, we headed back to our hotel (another short walk away!) There is a beautiful atrium bar at the Hotel de l’Opera called La Fee Verte (it means the green fairy) which is the name of the Absinthe based signature cocktail! Of course I had one! Potentially dangerous but delicious!
The coolest thing about this bar is there is a huge screen playing silent movies in the background. While there she got a chance to sit down with journalist Roman Raifeld for an interview that appears now in the April 2017 edition of Esquire Magazine KZ. Below is the English translation of her interview.

"The Rules of Life": Interview with New York based Jazz Vocalist Michelle Walker.

MY PARENTS: My parents. If they had their way, I would be sitting in a nice office somewhere reviewing the latest trends in economic forecasts, not singing jazz. I followed my dream. It's hard for my family to understand my unwavering passion but they support me.

MY BUSINESS LIFE: I may be in the middle of life, but I feel like it's just the beginning. When I arrive in a new city, I typically and barely have enough time to communicate with the new jazz musicians I will be playing with and set the sound check in the new room I will perform, rehearse and prepare for the performance. I want to change this so that I have time to talk with ordinary people. The lovely locals folks attending the show to understand their life and see how life is for them. I am visiting many parts of the world most Americans will never visit. I want to learn as much as I can as a world traveler. Music is not just business, it's an adventure and fun for me.

MY PERSONAL LIFE: I think I consist of two parts; One half of me is artistic, the other is analytical. I need to consistently find ways to feed them both. When I can find the time, I like to blog. Years ago, I was an active blogger. I started to blog not only to educate people about politics and policy positions but to deeply investigate ideas and stories to learn all about it myself. This is another part of my life. I write about the problems both social and health issues relating to women, I encourage women to support each other.

MY FAMILY: I am the fifth child of six. I come from a big family. For the most part I think we grew up as happy children, we had very clever parents who found interesting ways to keep us occupied. My father was a military man and my mother insisted that we all the family always move with him from base to base around the world. Most of my childhood memories are related to the packaging of things. I had to learn how adapt quickly to new schools and friends. Couldn't dwell on the past and the loss of friends because new friends were just around the corner. I think this is why my older Sister is my best friend, I think she'd say the same of me. There is no day that I do not receive an email from her, SMS, a Skype call or a greeting in Facebook. She is our family's little general. I love her most of all on this planet, except maybe my mom.

MY OUTLOOK ON LIFE: I try to be positive, but the new president and his vice-president do not have much respect for women so that worries me as they come into power. What can you say if the vice-president comments on the women's protest marches with the phrase: "Why did husbands let their wives leave the house for this march?" It's a level of ignorance and social insanity I did realize existed.

MY OUTLOOK ON LOVE: We need to love. Love is one of the most important things that you can experience in your life. It is learning to love and not some fancy degree you earn in college, that can allows you to feel part of humanity. Like I wrote in one of my new songs, Human Touch, it's all about human "connectivity". So, If through my songs I will be able to achieve this idea, to reach out to people and connect with them, I will consider my mission accomplished on Earth.

Love has changed me. I was an ordinary young American, going through the motions of life working hard at University, studying music, preparing for good citizens life of work portion of my life, etc. until I met a man who seemed to jolt me awake from some hum drum slumber. Looking back, it was like I was some sort of robot, with work blinders on, nothing seemed to touch me; I felt no feelings. And although the relationship was not successful, it taught me a lot. I will never return to that robotic mentality that I had before.

MY LISTENERS: I am a singer and I must constantly think about the audience. Yes, there are some instrumentalists that do the same but for the most part I think almost all singers think about their audience. Once I talked to this one drummer, and I asked him: when was the last time you looked at the in public eye while onstage? Never. Why? His answer was not surprising at all, just what I expected but nonetheless it felt "off putting" to hear him say they came to listen to me, not him. That he doesn't have to build an instant relationship with them like l had. I wonder how many others feel this way?

MY UNIQUE GIFT: I am not sure I am unique. I think I like to say I like to share my gift of song. Not sure it's overly unique but It's all I have to give. Sincerely, I believe that we singers have an amazing opportunity to make people feel a large array of emotions. I had a terrific teacher - Mark Murphy. He once said: "You have a wonderful timbre of voice, it can affect people emotionally. You have to reach every pair of eyes looking at you, penetrate their bodies and grab their hearts!"

In spirit, I am a little bit of a hippy. I was born too late to enjoy that timeframe. I do recognize my hippy self gives me freedom of mind, spirit, personal freedom, in which I try to destroy all the walls separately me from family and friends. Walls that separate you from real feelings, emotions. My philosophy of life is When you meet a friend, try to hug him/her so tightly, as if this is the last time you see them alive. It draws you closer to them.

MY OUTLOOK ON THE MUSIC INDUSTRY: How do I assess the situation in the music industry as a whole? It totally Sucks! It's all a shitty situation that most artists don't have a clue how to navigate. The industry does not appreciate the idea or phenomenon an musical artist. It does not recognize that live performance is itself an art form that has high humanitarian, intrinsic value. All that the industry respects today is the budgetary framework.

Today I earn exactly the same amount of money as I did 15 years ago. This music market should grow at the same pace as the cost of living. Most working musicians I know are the working poor class. But, like many of the musicians I know, in the end of it all, Art is more important to me than money. This music life, this is a conscious choice. Many musicians will tell you that they did not decide to play jazz, that jazz called them. They did not choose their instrument, their instrument chose them.

MY OVERALL RULE OF MY LIFE: Interesting question. I sometimes think about how I got here, becoming a singer. When I was a small child, believe it or not, I was too scared to talk for a long time. Mother took me to the doctor, and he, after having examined me, said: try getting her to sing, maybe, then after singing, she will start to talk. It worked for the most part. I performed in many plays as a very young person. It lead me to go a school for drama. When I was about 13 , I was heavily engaged in ballet. I came back to singing. No matter what I did, I always seemed to comeback to singing. It is the biggest lesson of my life to just listen to what is going on inside of me and stop trying to appease others and fulfill their vision of what they think I should be.

In the end of my life I hope I can say I was an adventurous, pioneering person. Most people want the opportunity to visit popular cities like New York, LA, London an Paris. I enjoy and have enjoyed performing and visiting places such as Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Russia, Israel, Belarus and Indonesia. I'm a jazz pioneer, well, I feel the tiny pioneer in me anyway and keep my suitcase partially packed at all times for the next call.

Learning to enjoy your own life is a truly difficult task I think. Not enjoy a few things here and there but the whole ride of life, the ups and downs. That I think is important to me. To recognize the process is meant to enjoyed.

If I manage to find myself in some off the beaten path township halfway around the world where English is not the language, and can somehow still touch a person so deeply with my voice and the music that they begin to shed tears, open up their soul, Breathe more deeply, well, then you can assume that I brought something into their life that they didn't know they needed. That's all I can hope and pray to do with my life.

Michelle Performs live at Smoke Jazz Club May 11, 2017.

Listen, Purchase and Download tracks from Michelle Walker's latest CD Love Misery available at Amazon.com. https://www.amazon.com/Love-Misery-Michelle-Wa.../.../B0153W5R4S

JOIN THE CONVERSATION:
#LoveMisery
#LoveMiseryTour
#MichelleWalkerJazz
#MichelleWalkerMusic
#JazzVocalistMichelleWalker
#MichelleWalkerSings
#MichelleWalkerJazzSinger
#MichelleWalkerJazzVocalist

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT MICHELLE:
http://www.michellewalker...
http://www.facebook.com/M...
http://www.twitter.com/mw...
http://www.instagram/mwalkerjazz

MEDIA & PRESS CONTACT:
PL Arts: Management, Booking & PR
PerformingLiveArts@Gmail.com

About JGP RECORDS:
JGPRecords@Gmail.com
JGP RECORDS is a New York, NY based independent jazz and world music record label launched in June 2001.
